Her power to speak with ghosts was obtained from her grandmother who taught her how to use the power.

One main thing which has made the series a success is the character of Melinda which has been done by Jennifer Love Hewitt. Another thing is the plot of every episode which is very thrilling and excellent. The viewers are made to catch up every scene in spite of the commercials in between. And at the end of each episode the viewers are left expecting what happens in the next episode. This quality of the series has made it as a hit show among viewers.

In addition to the excellence of Jennifer love Hewitt as Melinda the other supporting characters also prove to the success of the series. The characters of Jim Clancy who is the husband of Melinda is cast by David Conrad and the role of Andrea Marino is done by Aisha Taylor excels equally as that of Melinda.
